Just watched Stranger Things seasons 1 and 2 in 2 days. Anyone else watching/watched it? Pretty good series

{Ed001's Note - not seen it, what is it about? I tried watching Power but it had 50 Cent in it and he stank up every scene he was in. Tried that The 100 but it was just trash. Impulse was meh. Gave that 'The Handmaid's Tale' a bash, but just found it a bit dark and disturbing for my tastes. I just want something on in the background while I edit that keeps me focused on work and makes me notice the time when I have to change episode. Otherwise I can get lost in research or writing and end up not noticing I haven't eaten all day.}

I really don't know how to explain it without creating the great wall of text, so I guess I'll just post the trailer and hope it grabs you.

{Ed001's Note - I will take a look thanks.}

Sorry I posted a bit too quickly before, so I'll carry on here.
What I will say, is there are some genuinely great moments in the series, with excellent acting, excellent script and even though some of it is a little bit cliche it works brilliantly. For example, you have your typical bullies and your typical teen parties etc, but those moments genuinely build the characters and don't just put on a show. There is also a typical love triangle going on, and when that one finishes, another one starts, but again it works well.
Admittedly, this is all stuff that would normally annoy the hell out of me and make me turn it off, but it's actually done well and I feel it even helps the series along. There is a scene in season 2, involving one of the nerds Dustin and a popular older kid called Steve. They are just walking down a railroad talking, but it's one of the best scenes in the series outside of the main characters.

The best way I can say it, is if you're a bit of a nerd and enjoy dark science fiction, then you should appreciate some aspects of this series at least.

Bit more on Amazons lord of the rings show ed. Rumour has it that its going to follow young Aragorn. Probably when he comes of age and finds out his true name and lineage then off to prove himself. I'm expecting them of course to mess it up and have him start out ad the typical arrogant young hothead who messes up and learns valuable lessons that shape him into the wise Aragorn we see later on in the films. That and a lot of emo angsty stuff because of arwen.

{Ed001's Note - that sounds likely but hopefully it will be more GoT-ish.}

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Jun 2018 12:52:32
Hopefully so. There's so much potential. GoT shows how it could be done well even with the weaker source material GoT has.

{Ed001's Note - I have to admit, having tried to read the books the series is based on, I don't get how GoT went so big. They are dreadful.}

Agree0 Disagree0

12 Jun 2018 22:23:07
I know, they're so hard to read. Just too many random characters to keep track of that are there for five minutes that you forget about only to pop up again ages later.

I imagine the concept appealed. Fantasy. Dragons. Zombies. Battles. Ticks boxes for a lot of people. Om sure the naked ladies on screen had little impact.

Anybody watched 'Power' ? really enjoying it tbh, never heard of it until the other day and now I'm upto season 2 lol. Really reminds me of the wire so if you liked that, I'd recommend it.

I also started to watch lost, bloody hell what was all the hype about? I'm sorry but it's terrible in my opinion, just everything about it is truly awful and made me cringe!

A few other things I've been watching aver the past few months:

Gomorrah, love it, possibly one of my favourites of all time.

Big Little Lies, don't hate on me, it wasn't my choice to watch this lol have to do what you have to do to keep the Mrs happy!

{Ed001's Note - I have not seen Power, in fact I haven't seen any of those shows, though everyone seems to rave about Narcos and Suits. I thought you would like Billions as the lead is a Liverpool fan.}

Agree0 Disagree0

06 May 2018 08:39:35
Yes got to love Damian Lewis mate lol I've always liked him as an actor, especially in Band of Brothers, now that was a bloody good series.

TWD, I loved at one point but I feel it's losing it a bit now and has been for a few series, time to finish it in my opinion, they're going round in circles with it I feel and it could've been a lot better, it always seems so dragged out.

Narcos I loved, I just wish there was more out so I could binge watch, after season 2 I didn't see how they could pull off another season and they did which surprised me, definitely recommend that one if your into that kind of stuff. I love my mafia kind of programs, Narcos, Gomorrah, sopranos, boardwalk empire etc.

Suits, like billions, wouldn't usually be my kind of series but gave them a go and was surprised, chuft I gave them a go because they pull you in wanting more after each episode, great actors, most of which I've never seen before.

Big Little Lies, typical woman kind of program but I'm going to be honest, I didn't mind it lol not something I'd say is fantastic or anything but it was something to watch and I can't say it's terrible.

I tried to watch that Mr Robot but I don't know, I don't think it's for me, seems to weird! I don't like the main part at all (Rami Malek) having said that, I haven't seen many so maybe I was too quick to quit it but you'd expect from the first few that they'd pull you in to watch more, it didn't do that for me.

You got any suggestions Ed? running out of things to watch, especially after I finish this Power.

{Ed001's Note - I wouldn't waste time on Mr Robot - it is dire. Lucifer is excellent.}

Agree0 Disagree0

06 May 2018 09:23:13
Ah yes, Lucifer, I've read good things about it, that's after Power then!

{Ed001's Note - I really enjoy Lucifer, one of the best shows I have seen in years.}

06 Apr 2018 16:02:44
Ed1 have you seen Amazons doing a 1 billion 5 season version of Lord of the Rings? Alas they've said Jackson is involved. Not sure its needed but probably jumping on the GoT bandwagon especially with that due to finish and a large fantasy audience available.

{Ed001's Note - I didn't know that, not sure how that will work. It could be amazing but I doubt it. The books are just too complex for TV or film. The concepts he wrote about are going to be very difficult to make into a series. It is difficult to get an idea over to people via pictures, text does that much better as it enables a person's imagination to take over and provide the pictures.}

Agree0 Disagree0

06 Apr 2018 22:39:56
I'm not sure how it would work either. They'd have to cut a lot of what you said out. It would play just as a straight adventure which lessons it.

Funnily few weeks back I was thinking about how with GoT coming to the end it left a gap in the market and I was trying to work out how to film the Silmarillion for tv. Bloody hard it would be.

{Ed001's Note - Tolkien's stuff just isn't suited to the medium at all. Some books are, not his though.}

Agree0 Disagree0

06 Apr 2018 23:27:15
That's what I realised. Some of it would make for brilliant tv. The whole Beren and Luthien story for example. But the higher concept stuff like the Ainulindale just couldn't be done.

{Ed001's Note - shame though, as it would be great if it could.}

Agree1 Disagree0

07 Apr 2018 00:04:20
I think you've got to get the balance right in explaining it. You don't want to have to spoon feed it as that would just suck the pace out of it but you've got to explain enough so people who aren't familiar with it aren't lost. It can't be too simplified that you treat the audience as thickos but it has to enough to keep the attention. GoT as an example whilst not having the high philosophy concepts was quite complex just in terms of the cast of characters, the 3 separate stories ranged over a wide geography etc and they streamlined it down to be more manageable

{Ed001's Note - not sure they did, I kept losing interest and have not bothered watching it all as I kept forgetting who was who as I only watch shows every now and again.}

Agree0 Disagree0

07 Apr 2018 13:05:45
Well the books are worse. Tried to read them but it got confusing keep cutting back and forth between characters. One example, the red headed whore that was in the first few series was a combination of 3-4 minor characters into just 1. So they did do a lot of tidying up and condensing but it is something you have to keep track of.

Going back, have you ever played lord of the rings online?

{Ed001's Note - I have never read the books, me dad has them but he never seemed all that impressed with them so I haven't bothered.

I have not played that no. Is it like ESO?}

Agree0 Disagree0

07 Apr 2018 13:53:05
Yeah they are hard going. Because there's no central narrator and its constantly moving between who's narrating its confusing. Its better on tv I have to say.

Basically you run round middle earth doing quests and your path crosses the fellowship

{Ed001's Note - I never even knew that existed. What platform is it on?}

Agree0 Disagree0

07 Apr 2018 17:11:00
PC. Takes a few hours to download but its free. Altho there is vip option.

{Ed001's Note - free? Just my price range then. Might have to take a look at that.}

07 Apr 2018 18:10:03
Well first came out in 2007 as shadows of angmar, I remember it coming out but was pricy. Then I found it few months back whilst looking something up. They've just done two updates adding Mordor and Mirkwood. I think the expansions aren't free but haven't got that far. You can be elf, dwarf, hobbit, man, high elf ir beorning, pick a class like hunter or burglar an jump in. There's an epic quest storyline an loads of side quests. The visuals are pretty good.

{Ed001's Note - ok you've sold me on it, I will have a look for it later. Just waiting for Man Utd to get to the Etihad so that game can kick off, City seem to have been playing a long training game while they wait.....}

The only saving grace for this season is the major plotlines occuring. Everything else has been dreadful, went from a show with excellent writing to the sorry stare it has become now. How much of it is down to the GOT executives having to cram everything into last remaining two season, I don't know.

Had another Mr Robot moment watched the first episode of Ozark and it drew me in I thought this is going to be great then watched the next 6 and absolutely nothing happened so give up watching it.

Basically there's a few men who launder money for the Mexican cartel and it starts with a couple of men who try to steal 8m from the Mexican boss which he finds out so he does what any cartel boss does but one man begs for his life tells him he'll earn that back plus extra and I'm afraid that's where it ends all that happens after that is he starts buying businesses to hide the dirty money in.

Oh and it's Jason Bateman in a serious role he's no good in comedy roles which he is mainly known for.

{Ed001's Note - I have to say that show never appealed to me at all, I read a precis and thought 'naw'. It sounds crap.}

Last night I went on a bit of a youtube bender watching old Game of Thrones clips and it got me marvelling just how brilliant the early seasons were, it also made me a little sad ahead of season seven knowing that the show is unlikely to hit those heights again.

The brilliance of Game of Thrones was never the dragons or battle scenes or any of the magical side of things, it was the characters and how their own personal ambitions and motivations clashed with each other. I loved how there were no straight up villains, when Tywin Lanister assassinated Rob Stark it wasn’t because he was a ‘baddie’ he did it to bring a war to end and saved thousands of lives (shades of America using the atomic bomb in WW2). The best scenes had no action at all, just brilliant dialogue, most of the plot occurred in the small council chamber as various schemers jockeyed for position and power.

The show today is very different, there is less ambiguity about the character’s motivation, Cersai and Euron are straight up villains to be defeated whilst Tyrion, Jon and Dani are the goodies coming to save the day. Brilliant dialogue has been replaced by spectacle and whilst I’d never deny that set pieces like the ‘Battle of the B***erds’ are incredible they’re nowhere near as interesting as a character using guile to achieve the same thing.

I will watch the last two seasons religiously, I’m too invested in the show to skip it, I just hope that, as we approach the climax, the show still has some tricks up its sleeve and we’re not just heading towards a climax where were the goodies defeat the baddies and everyone lives happily ever after.

19 Jul 2017 21:23:09
I think it's just a case of them having to wrap up things quickly. A 10 season series would probably have done complete justice to the series but that is of course not possible due to a variety of reasons.

While I agree that over the past two seasons and even in Dragonstone, they've gone for big moments (The Red Toast? That whole scene was a bit illogical too me but cool nonetheless) , I think it's just something us long time viewers will have to accept.

And regarding your point of being clear good and bad characters ,I agree to some extent. For me they've completely screwed up Daenerys's story arc. The whole Mereen plotline was just boring to me. However GRMM has said that it'll be a bittersweet ending so hopefully there's more shades to her personality. Perhaps she sacrifices her life after all the effort she has put in for The Iron Throne.

But then again there are characters like Jaime and Sandor who have had brilliant story arcs throughout the series. Sandor was the star of the last episode for me. I think he has moved away from The Hound is now just Sandor Clegane.

Caught up on Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. over the past few days, mostly because I was just interested to see how they tied it in with the films. Despite the appearance of Ghost Rider, a character I like a lot, I was really disappointed with this show. It made a few references to events from the films, but it was very much separated.

It never felt like the same universe that has Capt America etc in it. They are so hugely conspicuous by their absence, even when events would clearly have attracted the involvement of some of them. Every reference to them, or the films, just made it more obvious that they were missing.

They need to solve that problem, to make their absence less conspicuous. Either by creating storylines that properly integrate with the films', including a few of the heroes in the show or by running storylines that clearly would not call for the involvement of the superheroes.

I watched Mr Robot over the last few days, admittedly I tend to not concentrate that hard on what I am watching as I am busy editing, but it was hard work. Easier to copy and paste but here you go

At the helm of the USS Nathan James en route to the Arctic, Capt. Tom Chandler learns that the destroyer will be in the best possible place -- a circumstance his crew must utilize -- to save humanity from extinction. A virus has wiped out more than half the population since the ship embarked, and despite orders from the U.S. government to return, Chandler -- believing home is now a shadow of itself -- decides the safest place to develop a vaccine is at sea. That task falls mainly to virologist Dr. Rachel Scott, a civilian originally assigned to the Nathan James to study birds. "The Last Ship" is based on a novel by William Brinkley and is executive-produced by filmmaker Michael Bay ("Transformers").

Let me start by saying so far have been a if fan of netflixes marvel shows. Jessica jones was solid, Luke cage orginal, and daredevil brilliant (particularly the last season with punisher!) but have tried watching the first episode of this 3 times and haven't finished it once.

Is just bad, dunno how to put it. The main character is unlike able, the plot is slow and worst of all seems more focused on business strategy stuff then martial arts. Sounds silly but with the concept they are working with was hoping it would be more of an action driven show. may try pick it up later but for now can't be bothered really

Sorry but for the premise of it expected it to outshine the other shows in regards to fight scenes.also is boring and the main character is just so annoying and unlike able you just want to round house him when you see him.shame as thoroughly enjoyed all the other shows

11.22.63 is the title.

{Ed001's Note - oh sorry I never noticed that, I assumed that was the timestamp! Old age there on my part, going blind I think.}

haha I should have made it clearer Ed!

{Ed001's Note - it is my fault, when I looked again I could see it, I just wasn't thinking.}

Fear The Walking Dead

I am not the biggest fan of The Walking Dead, to be perfectly honest I find it a bit boring and long winded personally, with too much drama and not enough action. So I watched this hoping, as I had been led to believe, it would be a lot more urgent with more action, as the zombies took over. What I got was very much more of the same, just with different characters and in a setting when the zombies were just beginning, rather than after they have control.

That did add a little more in the way of interesting storylines, dealing with the outbreak, the military etc, which made it more appealing than the original show. At least in my opinion anyway. The weak point, for me, is the characters. I just did not like any of the main group. Not one. In fact I was growing to dislike them each more and more by the episode. Instead of empathising with them and rooting for them to survive, I simply did not care if they died. In some respects it would have been a relief if some of them were killed off.

Admittedly I have only seen the one season of it, which I think is all that has been released so far, so I will probably give it another go with a second season. Mainly in the hope that there are new characters introduced and the family it centres around are pruned out nice and early. As such, I find it difficult to recommend it to anyone who is not a big fan of the Walking Dead.

I'm surprised you managed to even get through the season ed. Stopped a couple of episodes in after I clocked it was the same garbage. I've already got the walking dead to disappoint me don't need a new show.

{Ed001's Note - I was only watching to see the family get killed off (hopefully) as I found myself disliking them.}
