Anyone else looking forward to Good Omens?

Mort99

{Ed001's Note - I have never heard of it.}

1.) 27 May 2019 22:53:10
1990 book written by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman. Its a take on The Omen, son of the devil starting the apocalypse, plenty of satire. Wont say too much on the plot for spoilers. Good cast. Michael Sheen and David Tennant amongst others. 6 parts on Amazon prime. On bbc2 nearer Christmas.

{Ed001's Note - oh no can't stand either author's work. I tried that American Gods and it started off promising but disappeared up its own backside after a while. Beautiful cinematography but the show was just awful. And I have never liked anything by Pratchett. I will give it a miss I think.}

2.) 10 Jun 2019 18:32:36
I actually did end up watching it. It was ok actually, enjoyable enough but very Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy.

Bit more on Amazons lord of the rings show ed. Rumour has it that its going to follow young Aragorn. Probably when he comes of age and finds out his true name and lineage then off to prove himself. I'm expecting them of course to mess it up and have him start out ad the typical arrogant young hothead who messes up and learns valuable lessons that shape him into the wise Aragorn we see later on in the films. That and a lot of emo angsty stuff because of arwen.

Mort99

{Ed001's Note - that sounds likely but hopefully it will be more GoT-ish.}

1.) 11 Jun 2018 12:52:32
Hopefully so. There's so much potential. GoT shows how it could be done well even with the weaker source material GoT has.

{Ed001's Note - I have to admit, having tried to read the books the series is based on, I don't get how GoT went so big. They are dreadful.}

2.) 12 Jun 2018 22:23:07
I know, they're so hard to read. Just too many random characters to keep track of that are there for five minutes that you forget about only to pop up again ages later.

I imagine the concept appealed. Fantasy. Dragons. Zombies. Battles. Ticks boxes for a lot of people. Om sure the naked ladies on screen had little impact.

Ed1 have you seen Amazons doing a 1 billion 5 season version of Lord of the Rings? Alas they've said Jackson is involved. Not sure its needed but probably jumping on the GoT bandwagon especially with that due to finish and a large fantasy audience available.

Mort99

{Ed001's Note - I didn't know that, not sure how that will work. It could be amazing but I doubt it. The books are just too complex for TV or film. The concepts he wrote about are going to be very difficult to make into a series. It is difficult to get an idea over to people via pictures, text does that much better as it enables a person's imagination to take over and provide the pictures.}

1.) 06 Apr 2018 22:39:56
I'm not sure how it would work either. They'd have to cut a lot of what you said out. It would play just as a straight adventure which lessons it.

Funnily few weeks back I was thinking about how with GoT coming to the end it left a gap in the market and I was trying to work out how to film the Silmarillion for tv. Bloody hard it would be.

{Ed001's Note - Tolkien's stuff just isn't suited to the medium at all. Some books are, not his though.}

2.) 06 Apr 2018 23:27:15
That's what I realised. Some of it would make for brilliant tv. The whole Beren and Luthien story for example. But the higher concept stuff like the Ainulindale just couldn't be done.

{Ed001's Note - shame though, as it would be great if it could.}

3.) 07 Apr 2018 00:04:20
I think you've got to get the balance right in explaining it. You don't want to have to spoon feed it as that would just suck the pace out of it but you've got to explain enough so people who aren't familiar with it aren't lost. It can't be too simplified that you treat the audience as thickos but it has to enough to keep the attention. GoT as an example whilst not having the high philosophy concepts was quite complex just in terms of the cast of characters, the 3 separate stories ranged over a wide geography etc and they streamlined it down to be more manageable

{Ed001's Note - not sure they did, I kept losing interest and have not bothered watching it all as I kept forgetting who was who as I only watch shows every now and again.}

4.) 07 Apr 2018 13:05:45
Well the books are worse. Tried to read them but it got confusing keep cutting back and forth between characters. One example, the red headed whore that was in the first few series was a combination of 3-4 minor characters into just 1. So they did do a lot of tidying up and condensing but it is something you have to keep track of.

Going back, have you ever played lord of the rings online?

{Ed001's Note - I have never read the books, me dad has them but he never seemed all that impressed with them so I haven't bothered.

I have not played that no. Is it like ESO?}

5.) 07 Apr 2018 13:53:05
Yeah they are hard going. Because there's no central narrator and its constantly moving between who's narrating its confusing. Its better on tv I have to say.

Basically you run round middle earth doing quests and your path crosses the fellowship

{Ed001's Note - I never even knew that existed. What platform is it on?}

6.) 07 Apr 2018 17:11:00
PC. Takes a few hours to download but its free. Altho there is vip option.

{Ed001's Note - free? Just my price range then. Might have to take a look at that.}

7.) 07 Apr 2018 18:10:03
Well first came out in 2007 as shadows of angmar, I remember it coming out but was pricy. Then I found it few months back whilst looking something up. They've just done two updates adding Mordor and Mirkwood. I think the expansions aren't free but haven't got that far. You can be elf, dwarf, hobbit, man, high elf ir beorning, pick a class like hunter or burglar an jump in. There's an epic quest storyline an loads of side quests. The visuals are pretty good.

{Ed001's Note - ok you've sold me on it, I will have a look for it later. Just waiting for Man Utd to get to the Etihad so that game can kick off, City seem to have been playing a long training game while they wait.....}

8.) 07 Apr 2018 23:06:09
Turned up in the end.

Its just good going through some of the areas and it feels more like middle earth than the films.

Also anyone that's of a certain age do you remember a tv show that used to be on ITV where a bunch of kids find and wake up merlin then go on a quest to find king Arthur racing against some bad guys. And Arthur turns out to be a samurai. I can't find it anywhere can anyone remember it or have I gone crazy?

1.) 30 Nov 2015 16:24:45
I don't know mate, what age are you talking about?

2.) 30 Nov 2015 21:18:46
Sorry thought i'd put that. Late 80s or early 90s

3.) 03 Dec 2015 19:27:34
It is ringing a bell mate, but that is all. I might be getting my kids TV shows mixed up, but did they not have a group each with a different vehicle with a special weapon of some kind?

4.) 05 Dec 2015 01:03:55
I think it might have been called wail of the banshee from 1992. After much searching I found a list of citv shows on wpedia. It does have a character called merlin in it and the guy does look familiar. Also the whole banshee thing is ringing bells.

Anyone watching the man in the high castle on amazon?

Mort99

1.) 30 Nov 2015 16:25:18
I was looking at that the other day, looks interesting, I was considering looking at it.

2.) 30 Nov 2015 21:20:36
Nearly every other advert on any of the channel 5 channels has one for it. It looks interesting. I tried to read it few years ago but couldn't get going. Might work well as a tv show.

It ended mostly as I expected. Arya went off to do her own thing, she's not the marrying and settling down type. Sansa got what she wanted, Winterfell and Northern independence although I wonder who she'll marry to create the next generation of Starks. Jon went back to where he was happiest. As you say Bran was left field but there wasn't anyone else left. Dany had been built up since early on. But it was rushed. I feel the previous series should've been 10 episodes instead of 7 to properly build it up more then come into the last series with them all feature length to give more time to show the effects of things.

O well its done. Onto the spin offs.

Id put the wire at no 1 and the sopranos at 2. The ending cost it points. But great tv show, some fantastic characters, great scenes, great lines, amazing cast. Paulie was great but even characters like Silvio an ralphie all were scene stealers.
