Anyone managed to get through Maniac yet? I'm 4 episodes in and haven't a clue.

{Ed001's Note - I haven't. Looked at it and it didn't grab me so started on the Gifted instead.}

Yeah I lost interest completely, when an entire episode seems to be a hallucination, going back to the 90s. It's so confusing.

I might give the one you mentioned a look, is it any good?

{Ed001's Note - it's ok, the blurb I read mentioned the X-Men, so I thought they might pop up during it, but all you get is passing references to them. It is mutants stuff, but it is more like a resistance v overlords TV show than a superheroes thing.

I am finding it difficult to give a toss though as most of the characters are a bit bland. None of them have been developed, so you just have a snot-nosed brat who is annoying and revelling in his power because you completely forget the fact he was being bullied at school, before his powers appeared as you only saw one quick moment of that. Even that was only to show how his powers manifested and to launch his family into joining the underground, rather than to develop him as a character. So, instead of understanding him, you just want to slap him.

The back stories are given such poor treatment that you can't really identify with the characters like you should be able to. They do the flashback thing to show a time before they joined the resistance movement, but it is little more than flashes and hints, not enough to really know any of the characters.

It doesn't help that they have so many different characters who just have short cameos and flit in and out. In time it could build into something, there is plenty of potential there. Right now though, it is a bit meh, not something you would turn over because it came on, but neither is it something you would go looking for imo.}

Fair point ed, you think it would be worth looking to at around season 3 or something? Assuming it gets that far of course.

{Ed001's Note - as you are a binge watcher (if I remember correctly) I would say it is probably best to leave it, yes.}

13 Oct 2018 18:53:42
Yeah I binge watch lol, I tend not to watch new shows until they've hit season 2/3 for this very reason. I find myself wanting more if I enjoyed the show, it's a struggle to remain patient sometimes!! For example, I'm itching for The Expanse season 3 and Stranger Thing season 3!!

{Ed001's Note - I can see why, they were both really good shows.}

15 Oct 2018 07:27:27
Where do you think they'll go with Stranger Things?

Personally, I'd like to see more of the Dustin and Steve friendship. I felt that their scenes later on the season 2 were one of the major things stopping the show from being too dark, as what happened to Will was horrible and the incredible acting from Winona Ryder, made it almost believable. So because of that, Steve and Dustin need to keep some screen time!

I'd also like to see some more history brought into play, with perhaps some flashbacks to the other previous experiments 001-007, 009 and 010. Maybe more will come out from the shadows and help 011 defeat the shadow monster?

{Ed001's Note - I am defo with you on Steve and Dustin. That has a real potential for nostalgia and comedy, as well as providing some genuine likeability for the show. It offers something to draw in those who would otherwise dismiss this because of its darkness, horror elements or fantasy stuff. Balance is important, that provides the balance to stop it being too dark.

I am not sure where else they could go apart from into the history of the project really. Anything else could seem a bit samey to any other show, where another similar experiment is always attempted by someone who was involved etc.

It just has to be careful not to become too reliant on nostalgia, the video arcades, D&D etc.}

{Ed001's Note - what about things like Defenders and Inhumans? Are they any good?}

Agree0 Disagree0

01 Oct 2018 12:18:58
Inhumans was ok as well. Again, be interesting where they go with it. not watched Defenders yet and could not really get into Jessica Jones, Ironfist etc either. If and when I try again I will let you know mate.

Another one I watched recently was Seal Team, it has David Boreanaz in it. similar to Strike-back, pretty good if you like military type stuff.

{Ed001's Note - I quite liked Iron Fist, but I love martial arts films and it was clear that it took a lot of things from old martial arts films. But that was why the director used to be part of Wu Tang Clan, so named because of their obsession with martial arts films.}

Ed001, how did you get on with The Expanse and Stranger Things?

{Ed001's Note - Really enjoyed Stranger Things, even though it is not the kind of thing I would normally watch, as it leans towards horror in a lot of respects. However I loved the nostalgia of it and the programme itself was excellent, despite having a lot of kids in the cast, which usually ruins a TV show or film. This was something worth watching, the kids were mostly really good and geeky but likeable (or maybe it is because they were geeky they were likeable?). The bromance between the one with the teeth and what became, in effect, a big brother to him in the one with the Farrah Fawcett hair (I am rubbish with names sorry!) was really well done and felt like he genuinely took him under his wing. Only seen 2 seasons here, not sure if there is a 3rd yet or not though?

The Expanse I really enjoyed but found it required a lot of attention to really keep up with what was happening, too much to watch in the background while working. So I have not managed to get through it as I am watching an episode when I take a break from editing and there is no footie on. However it is a really good show I think so far. I have seen about 7 episodes in on the second season, so not sure how much is left, but well worth a watch.}

Season 3 of Stranger things is currently being filmed I believe. And yes, the bromance between Dustin and Steve is brilliantly written. I believe when I first mentioned it on here, I said that one of my favourite scenes in the show is Dustin and Steve walking down a railway line, just talking.
Glad you enjoyed it, I'm hoping in Season 3 they finally leave Will alone lol, poor kid has been trapped in another dimension, possessed by a shadow monster and almost cooked alive to remove the possession. Oh and he gets bullied and regularly called Zombie Boy!

Yeah the Expanse has a lot going on, really impressed with some of the science in it, even some of the fictional science. I'm excited for Season 3, which should be coming to netflix soon. Season 3 has not long finished being shown on the SyFy channel, so maybe a few months?

{Ed001's Note - I don't know, we tend to get things here at the same time as they are released, I just watch them on demand as and when I get time. I get Netflix and some HBO-equivalent called Starz here with the sports packages. I get about 40 channels of sports for about a tenner a month as well. There is not really much time to keep track of what is on when, so I just go through the on demand until something catches my fancy or browse back in time on the TV guide to find something.}

{Ed001's Note - is it not easier to list what you don't have? Blooming heck mate, it is a wonder you can even watch TV! Any one of them is enough to make life extremely difficult, I don't envy you at all having to cope with all of them. Yeah I've got a lot wrong with me, but it all stemmed from a situation which I should never have put myself in. So it's kind of my own doing, you know?
Where I live there is a lot of gang activity, being the impressionable young lad that I was at the time, I stupidly joined them and it got me stabbed. Now I'm too anxious to go to the shop(which is a 2 minute walk) by myself and haven't done so for 9 years.

Hopefully moving out of town soon, which I hope will be the start of me getting my life back on track.

The Defiant ones on Netflix prime is excellent

On Amazon - Jack Ryan is easy watching and I assume you've watched Peaky Blinders, Breaking Bad, Suits and American Horror Story

Defiant Ones is an interesting watch and the story of Dre and Jimmy Lovine is captivating and amazing.

{Ed001's Note - I will have a look for that cheers.}

Did you give them a go?

{Ed001's Note - I had seen Jack Ryan all the way through already. Not bad but a bit formulaic for me. I was not particularly keen on the Ryan character himself, he seemed a bit bland for me.

I love Peaky Blinders, I have been glued to that since it started and got all the other editors into it. I only watched it by mistake initially and am so glad I did.

Not a fan of Breaking Bad, one of, if not the, most overrated shows of all time. Got bored but kept trying until season 3 when it just got so ridiculous I couldn't sit through any more.

Not a fan of horror at all so never watched American Horror Story.

Suits is an odd one. It is watchable but I struggle to keep interest in it. It is supposed to be a comedy but I can't remember ever laughing watching it. It is not like say Inbetweeners, where you could end up laughing so hard you missed bits.

I still haven't seen Defiant Ones, I was busy watching through The Gifted when I get time to watch anything.}

Finally came to this page. Had to ask about a UK comedy series to watch on the "Liverpool Banter" page weeks ago before Ed01 directed me here.
Anyway, my suggestion for a TV show to watch is "Sons of Anarchy". It is loosely based on Shakespeare's Hamlet. Though it may be an old one that some persons would've seen, but it's one of my favorites.
There is also a US Series - Shooter. It's really nice.
And seeing as I like to balance my violence with comedy, I'll suggest "Coupling (UK) ", one of the best comedies ever, and "Veep".
Have fun people.

Just got done watching Zoo, Season 1 started off really, really promising. It was a very interesting idea about how animals no longer saw Humans as an apex predator, and began targeting them. I was lead to believe this would end up being an action series based on a war between man and animals, but instead, it became a bipolar sci-fi/action show, which didn't know whether its characters wanted to stay or go.

This got even worse in Season 3, as just about every single dead relative of Jackson Oz(the main character in the show) has some how found themselves to be alive, through the most miraculous of circumstances.
Oh and he has a long lost relative that was kept a secret from him. Plus a few other people "die" in his team and then are seemingly back from the dead. I am kind of glad they cancelled the show, as I would imagine Season 4 would have been talking hybrid animals acting like humans and having scientific debates with each other about how to manipulate the human race into working for them. Whilst wearing clown outfits.

As it’s a pain to get on streaming services over in the UK, I’d recommend anyone who likes comedy’s to give Community a watch on All 4. It’s an ensemble comedy which does lots of spoofs and homages of cult films. It launched the careers of the majority of the cast including Donald Glover (childish Gambino) and Alison Brie. The paintball episodes are also what got the Russo Brothers their Marvel films so the directing is top notch too!

Big mistake on my part. I think she's put an excellent spin on the character.

{Ed001's Note - whereas I only watched it as she was in it and I have a thing for her. Not my favourite Sherlock interpretation but it is watchable. I do love the character Sherlock Holmes, I used to read the stories over and over as a kid.}

Ah Payback, that was a bloody good film that Ed. But yeah she made the film much more exciting, my word.

I've not seen Elementary but may give it a go, I'm struggling to find good things to watch these days.

14 Aug 2018 21:05:18
Ah Ed tell me about it I don't like his stuff either but to be fair I'm not into horror kind of films at all, they all seem too similar lol.

Wow tell you what though, was looking at films from the 90's and 1994 was a fantastic year for films. The Shawshank Redemption, Pulp Fiction, Forest Gump, Leon, Interview with the vampire, dumb and dumber, true lies, legends of the fall, natural born killers, the crow, four weddings and a funeral and ace venture all released that year. I need a week or 2 off work and binge watch aload of the 90's films, was some right classics.

{Ed001's Note - I love The Crow, Natural Born Killers and True Lies, but the rest I would rather have my foreskin scraped with a cheesegrater than see again.

Oh sorry remove Leon from either list as I never got the chance to see it.}

Agree0 Disagree0

Hahahaha! class mate, each to their own of course but the main ones I loved out of that list were The crow, what a bloody film that was, NBK, Pulp fiction, interview with the vampire and legends of the fall, the rest I liked but they were my favourites of the year I think.

Leon is a good film mate I would advise it but there again I'd of advised the other films so you may not like it mate lol.

Here's one for you mate, what was your top 3 films of the 90's? for me this is very difficult to choose because so many top films were made but I'd go with Heat, Boyz n the hood and maybe casino. Again it's difficult, special mentions to goodfellas, terminator 2, matrix, fight club, seven, reservoir dogs, saving private ryan etc my god the list could go on and on lol.

The Expanse

Set more than 200 years into the future Earth has colonized Mars, the Asteroid Belt and some Moons surrounding Jupiter.

Tensions have been high between Mars and Earth for some time, with the Asteroid Belt(Belters) feeling that both view them as inferior and slaves(kind of true, but not completely).

It's a tale of betrayals and deception for the most part, losts of plot twists and interesting character reveals. It can get quite confusing at times, as there are 3 major storylines going on at once. One for Earth, one for Mars and one for the Belt, as well as several minor storylines being played out too. The great thing about it is that all of the storylines including the minor ones all form into one for the final 2 episodes of each series. I think it could be done a little better, but that doesn't mean they did it completely wrong.

The characters are interesting(although some are very, very annoying), and given it's a sci-fi show, you've kind of got to give it some room for cheesiness in the script. The thing I found most intriguing was how the gravity on different planets/asteroids effected the human body. I was quite pleased to see the realism in this, as it's something that is very rarely covered. For example, the people that were born/lived a very long time on the Asteroid Belt, had all kinds of bone deficiencies and muscular issue's, aswell as having severe pain while in normal gravity situations.

The CGI in places is awesome, as you'd expect of a space sci-fi show, but it's not the usual pew pew laser beams and phton torpedos. The hand held guns are more like mini-rail guns but not nearly as destructive, the spaceships have proper rail guns for close combat and tactical nuclear warheads for torpedos. Plus they have the planet destroying nukes, which(spoiler alert), Earth fires 151 of them at one point in the series, you'll have to watch it to find out why.

All 3 factions(Earthers, Martians and Belters) seem to paint each other as the bad guys, the show does you no favours in helping decide who's good and bad either, not until a full reveal later in the series.

Much of the show is either in the belt or in space, Earth has a few scenes, mainly in the place of government. I don't actually remember their being any scenes on Mars, aside from 1 training exercise by Martian Marines to introduce their characters.

For me, this show serves as a bridge between current real life technologies and the ridiculous technologies of shows like Star Trek. There is nothing like warp drives or pew pew laser rifles, it's predominantly just bigger and better versions of things we already have. I'm good with that, as I always wondered what came before the warp core or photon torpedos, you know?
Definitely worth a watch in my eyes and Season 3 comes out at the end of this year or the start of next year. Sorry if this seems to be all jumbled and rambling, I was just typing stuff about the show as it came to my head lol.

{Ed001's Note - I will have a look at this mate, thanks for the recommendation.}

Sorry I posted a bit too quickly before, so I'll carry on here.
What I will say, is there are some genuinely great moments in the series, with excellent acting, excellent script and even though some of it is a little bit cliche it works brilliantly. For example, you have your typical bullies and your typical teen parties etc, but those moments genuinely build the characters and don't just put on a show. There is also a typical love triangle going on, and when that one finishes, another one starts, but again it works well.
Admittedly, this is all stuff that would normally annoy the hell out of me and make me turn it off, but it's actually done well and I feel it even helps the series along. There is a scene in season 2, involving one of the nerds Dustin and a popular older kid called Steve. They are just walking down a railroad talking, but it's one of the best scenes in the series outside of the main characters.

The best way I can say it, is if you're a bit of a nerd and enjoy dark science fiction, then you should appreciate some aspects of this series at least.

Bit more on Amazons lord of the rings show ed. Rumour has it that its going to follow young Aragorn. Probably when he comes of age and finds out his true name and lineage then off to prove himself. I'm expecting them of course to mess it up and have him start out ad the typical arrogant young hothead who messes up and learns valuable lessons that shape him into the wise Aragorn we see later on in the films. That and a lot of emo angsty stuff because of arwen.

{Ed001's Note - that sounds likely but hopefully it will be more GoT-ish.}

Anybody watched 'Power' ? really enjoying it tbh, never heard of it until the other day and now I'm upto season 2 lol. Really reminds me of the wire so if you liked that, I'd recommend it.

I also started to watch lost, bloody hell what was all the hype about? I'm sorry but it's terrible in my opinion, just everything about it is truly awful and made me cringe!

A few other things I've been watching aver the past few months:

Gomorrah, love it, possibly one of my favourites of all time.

Big Little Lies, don't hate on me, it wasn't my choice to watch this lol have to do what you have to do to keep the Mrs happy!

{Ed001's Note - I have not seen Power, in fact I haven't seen any of those shows, though everyone seems to rave about Narcos and Suits. I thought you would like Billions as the lead is a Liverpool fan.}

06 May 2018 08:39:35
Yes got to love Damian Lewis mate lol I've always liked him as an actor, especially in Band of Brothers, now that was a bloody good series.

TWD, I loved at one point but I feel it's losing it a bit now and has been for a few series, time to finish it in my opinion, they're going round in circles with it I feel and it could've been a lot better, it always seems so dragged out.

Narcos I loved, I just wish there was more out so I could binge watch, after season 2 I didn't see how they could pull off another season and they did which surprised me, definitely recommend that one if your into that kind of stuff. I love my mafia kind of programs, Narcos, Gomorrah, sopranos, boardwalk empire etc.

Suits, like billions, wouldn't usually be my kind of series but gave them a go and was surprised, chuft I gave them a go because they pull you in wanting more after each episode, great actors, most of which I've never seen before.

Big Little Lies, typical woman kind of program but I'm going to be honest, I didn't mind it lol not something I'd say is fantastic or anything but it was something to watch and I can't say it's terrible.

I tried to watch that Mr Robot but I don't know, I don't think it's for me, seems to weird! I don't like the main part at all (Rami Malek) having said that, I haven't seen many so maybe I was too quick to quit it but you'd expect from the first few that they'd pull you in to watch more, it didn't do that for me.

You got any suggestions Ed? running out of things to watch, especially after I finish this Power.

Ed1 have you seen Amazons doing a 1 billion 5 season version of Lord of the Rings? Alas they've said Jackson is involved. Not sure its needed but probably jumping on the GoT bandwagon especially with that due to finish and a large fantasy audience available.

{Ed001's Note - I didn't know that, not sure how that will work. It could be amazing but I doubt it. The books are just too complex for TV or film. The concepts he wrote about are going to be very difficult to make into a series. It is difficult to get an idea over to people via pictures, text does that much better as it enables a person's imagination to take over and provide the pictures.}

I'm not sure how it would work either. They'd have to cut a lot of what you said out. It would play just as a straight adventure which lessons it.

Funnily few weeks back I was thinking about how with GoT coming to the end it left a gap in the market and I was trying to work out how to film the Silmarillion for tv. Bloody hard it would be.

{Ed001's Note - Tolkien's stuff just isn't suited to the medium at all. Some books are, not his though.}

That's what I realised. Some of it would make for brilliant tv. The whole Beren and Luthien story for example. But the higher concept stuff like the Ainulindale just couldn't be done.

{Ed001's Note - shame though, as it would be great if it could.}

I think you've got to get the balance right in explaining it. You don't want to have to spoon feed it as that would just suck the pace out of it but you've got to explain enough so people who aren't familiar with it aren't lost. It can't be too simplified that you treat the audience as thickos but it has to enough to keep the attention. GoT as an example whilst not having the high philosophy concepts was quite complex just in terms of the cast of characters, the 3 separate stories ranged over a wide geography etc and they streamlined it down to be more manageable

{Ed001's Note - not sure they did, I kept losing interest and have not bothered watching it all as I kept forgetting who was who as I only watch shows every now and again.}

Well the books are worse. Tried to read them but it got confusing keep cutting back and forth between characters. One example, the red headed whore that was in the first few series was a combination of 3-4 minor characters into just 1. So they did do a lot of tidying up and condensing but it is something you have to keep track of.

Going back, have you ever played lord of the rings online?

{Ed001's Note - I have never read the books, me dad has them but he never seemed all that impressed with them so I haven't bothered.

I have not played that no. Is it like ESO?}

Yeah they are hard going. Because there's no central narrator and its constantly moving between who's narrating its confusing. Its better on tv I have to say.

Basically you run round middle earth doing quests and your path crosses the fellowship

{Ed001's Note - I never even knew that existed. What platform is it on?}

PC. Takes a few hours to download but its free. Altho there is vip option.

{Ed001's Note - free? Just my price range then. Might have to take a look at that.}

Well first came out in 2007 as shadows of angmar, I remember it coming out but was pricy. Then I found it few months back whilst looking something up. They've just done two updates adding Mordor and Mirkwood. I think the expansions aren't free but haven't got that far. You can be elf, dwarf, hobbit, man, high elf ir beorning, pick a class like hunter or burglar an jump in. There's an epic quest storyline an loads of side quests. The visuals are pretty good.

{Ed001's Note - ok you've sold me on it, I will have a look for it later. Just waiting for Man Utd to get to the Etihad so that game can kick off, City seem to have been playing a long training game while they wait.....}

Turned up in the end.

Its just good going through some of the areas and it feels more like middle earth than the films.

Nor mine to be honest but really struggling for something to watch at the minute

{Ed001's Note - I can understand that, there has been nothing that has caught my attention in ages. Everything I have tried has not impressed.}

Legion - anyone else watched this? I have just finished watching the first season and it is just weird. I kept hoping it would make sense, or at least become entertaining but it is not really for me. Mind it is very much like an odd horror movie and I have never found those anything other than boring.

{Ed001's Note - I was really hoping for more comedy with it having Jermain Clement in it.}

yes, not been great, hoping it would be a Thrones esq Series, no where near it !!

{Ed001's Note - there were a lot of talk that it would be like a new must watch show, but I have watched the first 8 episodes and it has not really grabbed me. Having said that, I never got into Thrones in its first couple of seasons either.}

I tried that Knightfall show the other day to put on in the background and just leave it running during a busy day. Never realised there were just 2 episodes! Not enough to decide if it is any good or not really. Does anyone know if that was the lot or if they are making more?

I am still undecided on this show, after about 7 episodes, but I am still watching it so I guess it is ok enough for a first season.

I want to watch knightfall but once its a complete series as hate waiting a week for the next episode.
I watched the first episode of britannia but it gave me a headache. Don't think I'll watch anymore.

{Ed001's Note - I think the first season is done as it has stopped at 10. As for Britannia it was just bizarre and I stopped after the 8th.}
