Anyone watch the remake of Lost in Space?

Every episode of Season 2 is just a competition to see who can survive the most ridiculous scenario. These people should have died 50 times over.

I mean these people can't even walk along a beach without some kind of explosion or disaster happening.

{Ed001's Note - I hope so, it was a very good show.}

Has anyone seen the feature length episode of Red Dwarf that aired recently?

It was quite funny in parts, but very cringey in others. If you're a fan of Red Dwarf then you should probably still watch it, but does seem to have lost it's magic a little.

Difficult to explain but its a family guy who gets caught up in laundering money for a drug cartel. the proverbial hits the fan again and again. the casting is great and Bateman, Laura Linney and Julia Garner are superb.

Murder, deceit, drug lords, mobs, love and suspense - it has it all.

Takes a few episodes to get going but I could not get enough of it.

Defo worth a watch.

{Ed001's Note - doesn't really sound like my type of thing to be honest.}

Ed, so did you find time to watch the defiant ones?

Just watch Wolf of Wallstreet and the big short - just awesome. Why Leonardo didn't get an Oscar 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️.

{Ed001's Note - I completely forgot. Did you enjoy Wolf of Wall Street? DiCaprio was good I agree, but I found the film itself tedious apart from one scene.}

Agree0 Disagree0

15 Mar 2020 15:10:48
Loved it Ed. I’m a capitalist. I think the hero worshiping, how they celebrated and had zero morals was interesting. Thought it was funny and a brilliant film. Leonardo was just amazing and the “true” story somewhat unbelievable. A film I would put in my top 10 if isolated for covid 19

Big short - great acting, great story, Steve was awesome and I loved the topic of the film.

{Ed001's Note - I just found it utter nonsense and complete cack. The guy was a thief, not a capitalist. That is not capitalism, it is fraud.}

I'm so glad I've heard someone else say that Ed I agree it's utter rubbish that scene on the boat in the storm what a load of sh1t
I've sort of gone off Hollywood films I much prefer Korean or Japanese films.

{Ed001's Note - it was just a guy's fantasy retelling of his life to pretend it was better (and he was better) than the reality. I would put money on the fact he was a lonely man with no actual friends and it is much easier to hide behind a story like that than it is to admit he was miserable. You don't do that amount of drugs if you are happy with your life, you use them to avoid dealing with life.

I can understand that, a lot of Hollywood films now just use big budget effects and big name stars to hide the fact the scripts are terrible.}

Agree0 Disagree0

04 Mar 2020 10:09:59
hi guys, never watched or seen anything on it. what's it all about?

{Ed001's Note - it is sci-fi. Basically the main theme of the show is the friction between those still living on earth and those who have grown up on Mars and those who are from colonies elsewhere (Belters). That is in essence what it is about, though there are other stories running through it. It is basically about the Belters being the oppressed minority caught in between Mars and Earth's animosity. While it is fiction, they have tried to keep very close to scientific accuracy, while not letting that destroy the tale.

I highly recommend it.}

Agree0 Disagree0

08 Mar 2020 14:01:55
It is utterly brilliant northernbeasle. It's one of the few Sci-fi shows that actually takes the "sci" in Sci-fi seriously but not to the point that it's boring.

Star Trek it is not, so I wouldn't walk in expecting anything like that. However, I do see this show as a technology bridge between present day and Star Trek. In the Expanse they don't use warp drives, laser beams or anything that's scientifically out of reach. They still use current weaponary like guns and nukes, except they have the addition of rail guns and Nuclear fusion.

There is one major problem with this show though, and that's some of the acting is a bit cringe. However, it doesn't take away from the story or the shows quality.

And by the way, the CGI is some of the most impressive I've seen in a TV show, especially given the budget they had for the first 3 series.

Agree0 Disagree0

15 Dec 2019 11:13:06
Really enjoyed Season 4. You can tell they had a bigger budget this season too, as there were more planet based locations than in the previous 3 seasons, and somehow they improved the already really impressive visuals.

I won't go into storyline details as I don't want to ruin it for anyone. The show basically follows the same concept as it has been for the last 3 seasons. It takes a handful of characters and creates multiple storylines that are all connected towards the end. I'm quite happy about that as it's worked for 3 seasons already.

The new characters that were added all fit well but they came at the expense of other characters. We didn't see any of Anderson Dawes(OPA leader), and we don't get to see Fred Johnson(Navu captain) until the last two episodes. However they are frequently mentioned, so I expect to see them in further seasons.

The thing that impresses me the most, is how consistently accurate the science is with everything except for the Protomolocule. It reminds me of what Neil deGrasse Tyson said when he was reviewing the movie Gravity. He said "First get the science right, then distort it at your leisure".
And that's exactly what The Expanse has done. Anything that we can definitively prove as a fact, they don't mess with it(such as the effects of Gravity). But when it comes to the promomolocule that's where they let their imagination go wild.

It's science fiction done correctly, in my opinion.

The only thing that made it interesting, is that it's set in the early 1900s. But they've gone about it all wrong.

There is no construction of the fighting machine for example. But to sum it up, it seemed like the director and writers just watched the 2005 Tom Cruise WotW, then put it in Woking in 1910.

My favourite movie is the 1953 version personally.

Apologies if this is not the place for this question but I remember something being mentioned here sometime ago regarding this subject.

Does anyone know of any reliable, decent quality streaming services, predominantly for Sport (3pm premier league kick-offs), Champions League Games.

I recently took out a 6 month sub on a recommended provider but it's quality has seriously waned in recent times.

Well, I guess you'll have to keep yourself busy with that post credits scene in the final episode?

If you didn't see it, there is a scene at the end of the final episode, where a group of Russians are holding people captive. They also have a Demagorgon, which they feed prisoners to. They're going to grab someone from a cell when one of the Russians says "Not the American!"

Are they referring to a much loved character who may or may not be dead?

Top 10 Comedies

This was so hard to do, so many I realised after putting the list together that I forgot, such as Phoenix Nights with Peter Kay and Black Books with Dylan Moran, both of which really should be in there, but I decided not to alter it, even though they would definitely have been in there if I had remembered them when choosing 10. The only reason I am leaving them out still is simply because I could not decide where to put them, though both would be somewhere in the top 5. And now I have just remembered Royle Family as well! My top 10 is a complete shambles I apologise as I have completely forgotten about nearly half of the 10 that should be in there.

10. Married...With Children

I was still at school when this was on TV, late night on ITV if I remember correctly, at a time when I was supposed to be sleeping as I had school the next day. Whether it was actually that good or if it just seemed funnier because I was not supposed to be watching it (or Sledgehammer, which I also remember loving at the time), it has stuck with me and I still immediately think of the show when I see one of the stars of it in something else.

9. Men Behaving Badly

Looking back, I have no idea why this was even worth a watch but it seemed to work. It looks really dated now but then you look at the Clarkson/Hammond/May Top Gears/Grand Tours and you realise it is still going strong, just in a slightly different format. The thing about it was, we probably all identified with it to a degree, either in terms of knowing people like that or being like it ourselves.

8. The IT Crowd

This was on TV here the other day and it still made me laugh, Moss and Roy are great characters. It was just spoilt by Noel Fielding's infrequent appearances, which are about as funny as having teeth extracted without anaesthetic. The rest of the show was funny though silly.

7. Barry

Dark and violent as it is at times, it can shift to funny in a split second. Even in the midst of a scene of carnage it can make you laugh, especially through Noho Hank, who is ridiculous but funny. It should not work but it does.

6. Peep Show

The only thing these two have done together which is funny, Mitchell and Webb I mean. Somehow this show works. It is odd how the losers always make for the funnier characters. And these two are massive losers in the show.

5. Only Fools And Horses

It seemed to go on forever but still manage to stay, mostly, funny. There were odd episodes that failed to live up to the level of the rest but overall it is deservedly seen as one of the funniest shows of all time. Who can forget Del Boy and Rodney emerging out of the fog dressed as Batman and Robin to come to the rescue? And how many times have you heard someone quote lines from the show?

4. Red Dwarf

Cheap, cheerful, silly but somehow funny. It should never have worked but somehow it did most of the time. Oh and it introduced the word smeg to the general population, something my uncle Paul said all the time, long before Red Dwarf was thought of.

3. Two Pints of Lager And A Packet Of Crisps

Coarse, crass but seemed funny at the time. I do wonder if it would still work now, but it was funny. A lot of these shows have probably dated horribly thinking about it.

2. The Inbetweeners

Obviously not the US remake, which was the least funny abomination in history, but the original British version, which somehow was hilarious. That rare thing in a comedy show of being genuinely laugh out loud funny at times, as well as making you cringe at the stupidity of the characters. There are not enough shows made that are proper comedy shows that do make you laugh.

1. Fawlty Towers

It is not exactly PC and you could never make something like it now, but it is quite simply brilliant. Unlike many other shows they stopped before they ran out of ideas and just ended up repeating the same gags over and over. The best thing about it is that it was based on a real hotel and owner, that John Cleese met with the Monty Python crew when they stayed in the hotel while filming. He was such a horrible employer that the cook planted a bomb when he left while they were staying there! And who can forget some of the immortal lines from the show? I am sure we have all said 'don't mention the war' at least once in our lives.

Cheers for these lists ed! Shows how much the genre is struggling though with the majority of these being from 90's 00's.

Only fools is my personal favorite, mainly because i grew watching the repeats every Sunday. But I have never known a show that can make you change emotions so quickly, from genuine heartfelt moments, (where they were stuck in the lift) to laughing seconds later.

Two pints definitely won't age well. And would probably come across as incredibly sexist now!

I know there was a thread about Batman on the movie pages but does anyone watch Gotham?

I feel I shouldn't enjoy it but Batman's villians are probably my favourite out of DC and Marvel. And showing there origins makes a pleasant change then them just being rehashed for every re-boot.
The Bruce Wayne in this has that harry potter vibe about him, one in which he is the main character and the `saviour` but always ends up being the one saved. To the point where you end up liking the supporting cast more.
The show is very well made and has plenty of links to it's source material.
Special mention for the actor who plays the Joker as he has managed to put his own twist on probably the most iconic villian in comic books. To a point where I would love to see them develop it on the big screen, but DC have messed that up with so many variations of the joker.

It's in to the last series, so if anyone needs a binge and is a fan of batman and it's surrounding characters. I'd recommend giving it a watch.
